Ontology-driven fish stock depletion assessment system
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO is a source of knowledge and information, helping developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. An important Area for FAO is Fisheries Resource Management.
FAO's role in NeOn is to apply NeOn technologies to fisheries data, and build the prototype for a Fish Stock Depletion Assessment System (FSDAS). The goal of such an application is to show how making semantics of data explicit, and using semantically-aware technologies, can provide a unified access to diverse information and improve data sharing and interoperability. In fact, the Fisheries and Aquaculture department maintains various information and knowledge organization systems related to both fisheries and aquaculture. Although much of the data are 'structured', they are not necessarily interoperable.
Within NeOn, FAO has created a network of fisheries ontologies based on a number of FAO resources, including reference data for time series on fisheries, AGROVOC, ASFA, fact sheets, and FAO geopolitical ontology. The network is publicly available and reuse is encouraged.
Based on that network, FAO has developed an FSDAS prototype, a web-based application that demos the functionalities of a system that uses NeOn technologies and data lifecycle to enhance data interoperability.
